The most recent step toward the establishing of ridesharing through companies like Uber and Lyft in Moose Jaw came before Executive Committee last night, with a request that city administration consult with the public and current vehicle-for-hire operators to present both a taxi bylaw and rideshare bylaw.

No taxi bylaw currently exists in the city, with the report bringing forth a host of proposed recommendations regarding potential regulation. The report also seeks to develop similar rules and regulations for rideshare programs.

Coun. Luhnig said contact had been made with Uber and that council had been informed that the provincial regulations were in place and covered most of the needed bases. Luhning added that she hoped the plan would move forward quickly and easily in order to offer choice to Moose Jaw citizens.

The motion passed 6-1, with Coun. Swanson opposed due to what he felt was excessive redundancy and bureaucracy with the provincial bylaws.
