On Saturday, June 10, the South Hill Community Association is once again hosting its annual South of the Bridge (SOB) family event. This year, the event will be held at the Kinette Peter Pan Playground on South Hill.

“The main event has been around for a long time,” said Brandon Cochrane, vice-chair of the South Hill Community Association. “It’s just a family day to come out. There’s kids’ activities and trolley tours by donation.”

Admission for the event is free.

“There is no cost. The only cost is for the hot dog lunch,” confirmed Cochrane. “Everything is free, even the trolley. You can donate if you want but you don’t have to.”

This year, the most anticipated event is the scavenger hunt.

“The main event is the scavenger hunt. All around South Hill there’s… landmarks, buildings, et cetera," he said.

“On the scavenger hunt, it’s everything from finding some railway tracks to a Canadian flag to storefronts of local businesses. The scavenger hunt is more just to get you out around South Hill. There are some landmarks, a fence in that area — those fence posts that are painted to look like crayons.”

The scavenger hunt takes place across South Hill but allows you to choose the distance you cover.

“There’s some close if you’re walking, and some further if you’re biking. It takes you all across South Hill. You can do one, or five, or 10; it’s up to you,” said Cochrane.

“For that portion of it you enter a prize draw. There are six different prizes you can win. Everything you do you get a ticket for, every selfie you take. When you get your tickets, you enter them and that’s the main draw for the whole event.”

Prizes will be announced at the event. Some prizes have been donated, and others were purchased by the South Hill Community Association to support local business. Funding for this comes from donations made to the association.

There will also be a few new or returning events this year.

“It has been a few years since we have done bike decorating. There’s a couple more face painters this year and also a clown… it's been quite a few years since (he) has been there.

“The public library — that’s a new one this year. They are coming and will have a table there for kids’ activities.”

There will also be a trolley tour running every half hour. “They do a tour around South Hill, (and visit) a bunch of landmark locations. It’s a heritage-based tour,” Cochrane explained.

For lunch, hot dogs can be purchased through the Optimist Club of Moose Jaw. To cool down, Kona Ice will have a vending truck on site to provide shaved ice refreshments.

For those who may not be inclined to participate in activities, or who just want to check out the event, participation is completely optional.

“You don’t have to partake in anything. You can just come out and enjoy the atmosphere and if you do want to partake in the scavenger hunt you can do as many or as little as you want,” Cochrane added.

The South of the Bridge Day is an annual event that is held on South Hill and is put on by the South Hill Community Association. Despite its location, the event is meant to be inclusive for all.

“It’s just a Moose Jaw event put on by people on South Hill. Everybody is invited to it.

“Just come out and have fun!”
