Men’s basketball picks up win, hockey team drops pair in ACAC action
It was another solid weekend for the Briercrest College Clippers women’s basketball and volleyball teams this past weekend in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference action.

The women’s volleyball team, ranked second in Canada, posted a pair of 3-0 wins over Lethbridge College while the basketball squad, the sixth-ranked team in the CCAA, travelled to Calgary where they took a 75-58 win over SAIT before battling to an 84-77 victory over St. Mary University.

In men’s basketball action, the Clippers fell to SAIT 88-76 on Friday but rebounded to down St. Mary’s 93-84. The men’s volleyball team didn’t have as much luck as they lost 3-1 in both games against Lethbridge.

The Clippers men’s hockey team dropped a pair of games at home to NAIT, falling 5-0 on Friday and 11-1 on Saturday.

The women’s volleyball team were true to their national ranking, as they had little difficulty with the Kodiaks in either game at Margaret P. Reimer gymnasium, winning 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-17) on Friday and 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 26-24) in Saturday’s rematch.

Rebecca Garner led the Clippers offence with 13 kills in the first contest, while Mikayla Benterud had eight kills on only 11 attempts. Mia Harder was their defensive leader with eight digs.

Things were more spread out offensive in the second game, as Garner recorded nine kills and Kelsey Kelsey seven; while Benterud did most of her damage with her serve, racking up nine aces. Kirsty Kindrachuk contributed 13 digs.

The Clippers improved to 8-0 with the win and are in first place in the South Division.

St. Mary’s got off to an even more dominant start in Saturday’s game, building a 29-20 first quarter lead, but an absolute scorcher of a second quarter would see the Clippers leading 57-41 at the half.

Angenay Williams had an outstanding game, scoring 29 points including five three pointers, while Tilcox had 16 and Segroves 15. Jordens picked up 11 rebounds.

The Clippers improved to 4-1 and sit in second in the ACAC South.

The Clippers are now 2-3 on the season and in sixth in the ACAC South.

The Briercrest men’s volleyball squad ran into a bit of difficulty against the CCAA eighth-ranked Lethbridge Kodiaks, but even with the 3-1 wins, the Kodiaks knew they were in a game both days after a 25-18, 25-27, 25-23, 25-22 win in the opener and 25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 30-28 victory in the rematch.

The Clippers are now 5-3 on the season and hold down fourth place in the ACAC South.

The men’s hockey team ran into the top team in the ACAC and didn’t have a lot of luck on their side.

Dan Dekoning turned aside 41 shots in the opener at Barkman Arena in Caronport, with NAIT taking a 2-0 lead out of the first period and leading 3-0 through two before securing the 5-0 victory.

Saturday’s game saw Regan Poncelet score the lone goal for Briercrest with 1:18 remaining in the first period as the two teams went into the break with NAIT leading 2-1. The Ooks would find another level to their game, though and scored nine unanswered goals the rest of the way to secure the double-digit win.

Billy Cawthorn got the start for the Clippers and stopped 46 shots while surrendering nine goals through 40 minutes, Dekoning played the final frame and topped 21 shots.

Briercrest fell to 3-5-1-1 on the season and are currently tied for the sixth and final playoff spot in the ACAC.
