Canucks 18U AAA post pair of come-from-behind wins over East Central

Moose Jaw rallies late for 4-3 and 3-2 victories at Ross Wells Park
Only a few days removed from watching their 18-and-under AAA opposition rally in the late innings to win both ends of a doubleheader, the Moose Jaw Canucks were able to do the same when they took the field against East Central on Saturday afternoon.

The Canucks scored single runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in both ends of the twinbill at Ross Wells Park, taking a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox in the opener and winning 3-2 in the second contest.

Moose Jaw improved to 8-10 with the wins and moved into a tie for sixth place in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League standings.

The Canucks will have the next week off before travelling to Lloydminster to face the Northwest Prairie Pirates in a doubleheader next Saturday.

Canucks 4, East Central 3

The opening game got off to a rather strange start, as Canucks starter Kaleb Waller actually gave up a few runs in the early going.

The Canucks ace found himself trailing 3-1 through the first two innings, but would settle down and then some from there. He’d force double plays for key outs in the third and fourth innings and would hold East Central to a single hit the remainder of the game.

All told, Waller would allow three runs on three hits and strike out a pair, tossing 93 pitches to wrap up his complete game and quality start.

His teammates would pick him up with a pair of runs in the fourth inning to tie the game, leading to Kyle Duncan scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a single to centrefield by Kayden Hudson.

Hudson finished the game 2-for-2 with two runs batted in, Orin Olson also had a pair of hits.

Canucks 3, East Central 2

It was Cam O’Reilly’s turn to put together a stellar pitching performance in game two, and interestingly enough, it followed a similar pattern to Waller’s start.

O’Reilly allowed a pair of runs in the opening inning but tossed shutout ball the rest of the way, escaping minor jams in the fifth and sixth on his way to a quality start of his own.

He’d cap the 106-pitch complete game with two runs allowed on eight hits while striking out four.

And like the opening game, the Canucks got things done late at the plate.

After Moose Jaw got to within one with a run in the fifth, Nathan Varjassy reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a passed ball to tie the game the next inning. Evan Callaghan reached on a single one batter later and would himself come around to score the eventual game-winning run on a passed ball.

Olson had the only other Canucks hit on the day.
