Canadians are giving less to charity than ever before. The amount donated to charity by Canadians, as a percentage of income claimed on taxes, has hit a 20-year low.

According to a study by the Fraser Institute, less than one-in-five Canadians who filed taxes claimed charitable donations in 2017. As well, the amount donated is 0.54 per cent of income, which represents the lowest amount since 2000.

Locally, Moose Javians proved their generosity during this year’s CP Holiday Train.

The percentage of tax filers who claimed donation by province is as follows:

  • Manitoba (23.4 per cent)
  • Prince Edward Island (21.3)
  • Ontario (20.9)
  • Saskatchewan (20.5)
  • Alberta (19.8)
  • British Columbia (19)
  • Quebec (19)
  • Nova Scotia (18.6)
  • New Brunswick (17.9)
  • Newfoundland and Labrador (17.9)
  • Yukon (16.5)
  • Northwest Territories (12.5)
  • Nunavut (7.2)
