Take a trip down memory lane this Friday with the Bromantics. The local group will be hosting an old fashioned sock hop at the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre in Mosaic Place.
The evening will start with dance lessons, before shifting to the concert/dance.
“There will be jive and swing dance lessons. That is included in the ticket price. We will have qualified instructors come in,” said bass player Jim Mitchell. “They will walk everybody through the basic steps to do a jive dance or a swing dance. So, even if you have no dance background at all, you can learn a few basic steps that will keep you going throughout the night.”
A sock hop seemed like a natural fit for the band.
“The Bromantics is a band that plays 50s and 60s tunes. It’s the type of music that gets people up dancing, so we wanted to have a sock hop in a space where everybody can get up and dance the night away,” said Mitchell.
“We have done a sock hop like this in Regina back in April. It was very successful, so we wanted to bring the sock hop home to Moose Jaw because we always love to play here at home because we have family, friends, and a big a crowd of people who are dancers and who are hungry for an opportunity to get out and dance.”
If you have never seen the band before, you can expect to hear tunes from artists like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Paul Anka, and more. The band plays with lots of energy.
“The music of the 50s and the 60s has a charm and an innocence that sticks with people. That sounds corny but it makes people happy. You get up and dance and you are just happy and in the moment. The tunes are catchy and groovy and toe tappy. The response at all of our shows is phenomenal; the dance floor is almost always packed.”
Be sure to dress up and get into the spirit of the evening.
“We are encouraging people to dress up in costume in their 50s and 60s garb, so put on your poodle skirts or your greaser outfits. There will be prizes for best costume and best dancers.”
The doors open at 6 p.m. and the dance lessons will start at 7 p.m. The concert will go from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Tickets are $25 and are available on the Mosaic Place website, by phoning the box office at 306-624-2050, or at the door.
