AAA Warriors vault into third with win over Hounds

The Moose Jaw Warriors continued their ascent up the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League standings on Thursday night, moving into third place in the 12-team league with a 6-1 win over the Notre Dame Hounds.

The victory saw the local squad improve to 12-6-1-0 on the season, moving a point clear of the Prince Albert Mintos for third and sitting four points back of both the league-leading Saskatoon Blazers and Saskatoon Contacts.

Caelan Fitzpatrick had a hat trick for the Warriors, scoring his first marker with 8:25 gone in the first period before adding his second 17 seconds into the third and capping the night with his third goal with 5:41 to play. Fitzpatrick now leads the Warriors in scoring with six goals and 23 points through 19 games, good enough for 11th in the SMAAAHL.

Chris Otterson opened scoring in the contest, while Sam Boldt and Ben Wourms-Rowe had their other markers. Kirk Mullen and Connor McGrath had three assists each.

Warriors goaltender Chase Coward carried the shutout into the final five minutes, only to have Kyle Bochek score with 3:24 remaining to get the Hounds on the board. Coward would turn aside 27 shots to earn the win, the Warriors fired 41 at Notre Dame’s Jared Picklyk.

Notre Dame fell to 9-5-0-0 with the loss.

The Warriors are back in action Sunday when they host the Saskatoon Blazers. Game time is 1:30 p.m. at Mosaic Place.
