AAA Warriors to have home ice against Notre Dame in first round

Pair of wins in North Battleford push Moose Jaw past Hounds into fourth place

The Moose Jaw Warriors might have suddenly been forced to make up ground in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League standings in order to land home-ice advantage in the playoffs, but when you’ve had the kind of season they’ve put together, that isn’t going to be much of a problem.

The Warriors picked up a pair of wins over the Battlefords Stars in North Battleford this past weekend – 5-1 on Saturday and 5-3 on Sunday – to finish the season with a 30-13-1-0 record and in fourth place in the 12-team league.

That includes losing four points in the standings due to use of an ineligible player back in early November, a docking that in the end only cost the local squad a single spot in the league rankings: a 32-win campaign would have seen the Warriors land in third place, three points up on the Saskatoon Contacts, four back of the Regina Pat Canadians and facing Prince Albert in the first round.

Instead, the Warriors will get the Notre Dame Hounds, owners of the exact same record, only with the shootout and overtime loss record reversed.

The Warriors won the season series 3-1, with all four games seeing plenty of offence: Moose Jaw won 6-1 on Nov. 21, followed by a 7-5 victory on Dec. 12 and 6-4 win on Jan. 16.  The only blemish on their record against Notre Dame came in their most recent meeting on Feb. 12 in a 5-1 loss at Wilcox.

Game 1 will be held on Thursday at Mosaic Place. Game 2 will be played on Sunday, March 1 at Duncan McNeill Arena. Games 3 and 5 (if necessary) will be at Mosaic Place. All games will start at 7 p.m.
