The Moose Jaw Warriors are going to be a hard team to catch for first place in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League if things keep going the way they are.

The Warriors had a pair of goals from Connor McGrath on their way to a 6-3 win over the Tisdale Trojans in league action Saturday afternoon at Mosaic Place.

Atley Calvert, Sam Boldt and Matt Perkins all had goals in the first period as the Warriors built a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.

Tisdale wouldn’t go quietly, though, as Mackenzie Carson and Kalen Ukrainetz scored in the opening four minutes of the second period to tie things 2-2. McGrath would give the Tribe a 3-2 lead with five minutes remaining before adding his second of the game with 4:27 gone in the third.

Davis Fry closed out scoring with 7:57 to play in the game.

Wyatt Wilson and Lucius Schmidt each had two assists for the Warriors, Trenton Curtis finished with three helpers for Tisdale.

Chase Coward got the start in goal and was his usual effective self with a 21 save performance, while the Warriors had 33 shots on Tisdale goaltender Boston Gelowitz.

The Warriors improved to 23-8-1-0 and now hold a four-point lead over the Saskatoon Blazers and Saskatoon Contacts for first place in the SMAAAHL. Tisdale fell to 16-13-0-1 and sit three points up on Swift Current for the eighth and final playoff spot.

The Warriors are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they host the Beardy’s Blackhawks for the final time, as the SMAAAHL reorganization will see Beardy’s lose their franchise after this season.

Game time is 1:30 p.m. at Mosaic Place.
