The Moose Jaw AAA Warriors are slowly and steadily ensuring themselves of a first-place finish in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Warriors picked up their fifth-straight win since the Christmas break with a 4-1 victory over the Yorkton Maulers on Saturday afternoon at Mosaic Place. More importantly, the win extended their lead atop the standings to six points over the Saskatoon Contacts and Regina Pat Canadians, with Regina holding three games in hand.

It didn’t take long for the Warriors to get going in their most recent outing, either, as Atley Calvert scored only 38 seconds into the game to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead out of the first period.

Daitan Dmytriw would tie things up for Yorkton three minutes into the second, but that would be the last bit of good news for the Maulers, as Evan Callaghan restored Warriors’ lead before the period was out.

Austin Reschny and Kirk Mullen then added insurance markers 50 seconds apart with five minutes to play in the game to wrap things up. Parker Jasper would finish with two assists.

Chase Coward got the start in goal for the Warriors and made 21 saves while Kael DePape faced 41 shots in the Yorkton net.

The two teams are back in action for the rematch on Sunday afternoon, with game time at 1:30 p.m. at Mosaic Place.
