'A Christmas Rock Story' brings a rock and roll twist to Christmas this December

The lively and unique show will feature stunts, acrobatics, and rock and roll on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023

The Moose Jaw Events Centre is preparing for something new this holiday season, and with the perfect fusion of Christmas music, acrobatics, stuntmen, and a little rock and roll, ‘A Christmas Rock Story’ is something the whole family can enjoy this December.

The show is scheduled to take place Sunday, Dec. 10 at the Events Centre and starts at 7 p.m.

“People are used to going to your standard concerts or holiday concerts… but now to kind of mesh it all together, it’s a neat little unique twist to it,” said Corey Nyhagen, director of marketing and business development as well as acting AGM (assistant general manager) for the Events Centre.

“It’s not your regular circus, and it’s not your regular concert; it’s a mesh of it all and something a bit different and unique around the holiday season.

“It’s definitely something that hasn’t been here at the Events Centre before, which is very nice and (the sort of) things we like to do. It’s similar to when we had ‘Jurassic Quest’ here with the dinosaurs, and it’s just a different, unique event,” he said.

“It’s all Christmas themed. There will be original songs played, (including) original show songs… as well, they said to be prepared for that rock twist on Christmas classics,” Nyhagen said. “It is family oriented as well.”

The theatrical performance will walk the audience through the storyline of a character named Max, and as the protagonist goes along his journey, he interacts with a variety of interesting characters who include acrobats, aerialists, and stuntmen.

The storyline follows Max, a world-famous rock star known for his “legendary performances and larger-than-life persona,” according to the show’s official website. Max stumbles into the whole adventure when his private helicopter flies into a sudden winter storm and crashes into a small theatre on Christmas Eve.

Once inside the theatre, Max encounters a circus troupe who is preparing for an annual Christmas show.

The fusion of two worlds – Max’s rockstar, larger-than-life world and the fascinating world of the circus – then comes together to create “a thrilling and unexpected adventure,” the website reads. The storyline then follows Max and his unlikely new companions as they figure out a way to repair the helicopter and get Max airborne again.

Throughout the lively, entertaining experience, Max and his newly befriended troupe learn about the true meaning of Christmas. As the team overcomes challenges and figures out a way to work together despite their varied backgrounds, such lessons as the importance of friendship, teamwork, and the joy of giving are communicated to the audience.

Beyond that, the show’s producers have deliberately left out many plot details. Their reasoning, according to Nyhagen, is likely to allow the audience to follow the story along with Max, all while carefully avoiding any spoilers that might ruin the show’s dramatic conclusion.

“We’re really excited, and we don’t really know what to expect with the storyline itself. We’re not privy to that – the (only) information that we get is that upbeat, energetic, family-oriented ‘Christmas circus set to rock’ theme,” explained Nyhagen.

The performance is made possible thanks to Q Productions Las Vegas, which is a live entertainment and show creation company based out of Las Vegas, NV. The company plans live performances and utilizes high-tech elements such as computer holograms, lasers, and projection mapping.

“They’re also coming on a Canadian tour right now, so they’re (performing) in other venues across Canada as well,” Nyhagen said. “Luckily, we were able to get a nice weekend date… which also makes it a bit easier for families to prepare and come out.”

Nyhagen explained that the Events Centre is constantly on the lookout for exciting new shows, concerts, and other opportunities to bring to the community.

“We’re right along Highway 1 which is nice, and we’ve got a beautiful facility here that can accommodate shows of all sizes. It’s really nice to be able to bring in something different here and there,” he added.

“To come out and experience it is definitely going to be something unique,” Nyhagen said. “You want to experience it. If you haven’t experienced it, then until you do, that’s when you really get the understanding of what they’re all about.

“I think it’s going to be a really exciting time, and it’s going to be great for the kids and the younger generation to watch. (It’s also great for) fans of Christmas all over. ‘Tis the season,” he said.

To purchase tickets, stop by the box office at the Moose Jaw Events Centre or visit SaskTix.ca.

Tickets start at $57.50 plus applicable fees and taxes and will remain available right up until showtime. Nyhagen said group packages are available, and these can be purchased by calling or stopping by the centre’s box office.

“And – definitely be on the lookout. As we know, there are some sale dates coming out. Without giving out too many ideas, you could be surprised on a Black Friday sale or something like that,” Nyhagen hinted.
