A new online survey is asking Canadian producers for their opinions on proposed changes to seed royalty structures for cereal crops.

A series of public meetings were held in the winter. The meetings were organized by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The goal was to gauge feedback on two potential new models of collecting royalties on saved seed.

The government consultation process is currently on hold. In the interim, several stakeholders, including the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS), would like to hear from producers on the proposed changes before consultations resume later this year.

“Producers certainly weren’t satisfied with the level of engagement and consultation that went into the development of the two models currently under consideration,” said Todd Lewis, president of APAS, in a press release. “We want to make sure that producers stay on top of these discussions and have their voice heard throughout the process.”

The survey is now available at seedroyaltysurvey.com.
