ANN M OAK
March 18, 1932 – November 12, 2020
Ann passed away quietly surrounded with love, at the age of 88. Ann attended the Convent of Sion during her high school years, and oh the stories she could tell about all the theatrical occurrences during her years! She worked at Joyner’s using the famous “cash moving trolly” until she met John (Red) Oak, married, and raised 5 children. She decided to write and illustrate a couple of small children’s books just for her children, and when approached to publish she refused because they requested it to be hardcover. True to form, she had requested soft cover and low cost, always about accessibility. Needless to say, her children were the only fortunate ones to enjoy these books. The five children were not alone in our house, at the last count I remember there was over 40 “kids” that called mom and dad, just that. After Dad passed away, she spent most of her time in her yard(s). She always had a plan! At any given time, you could find diagrams she had drawn for her yard or a dream home, whichever mood she was in that day. Mom still had not gotten her drivers license, until the day she began working for Stats Canada, forcing her to learn to drive, and drive she did. She enjoyed this job, but it came to an end. When she started working at the Art Museum, she seemed to find her passion in art all over again. She went over and above her actual job to make sure everyone felt welcomed as well as informed! There were probably more young people visiting the museum while she was there, than before or after she moved on. She then spent the remaining days of employment with Woods Pharmacy. How nice to work with a long time friend in the days that poor physical health would have been a concern with any other employer. When the grandchildren arrived, she was overwhelmed with wanting to give anything she could to them. She loved it when they were around her, especially when they came to help. It always took much longer than it should, after all, what is better than one on one! Now she could regale them with stories of the past! Anyone who ever stopped by would never be surprised to see a food tray sitting on the couch beside her with a shaker of “onion salt” on it. This was the staple of her life, and she loved “her food”. Predeceased by her parents Olga and Hugh Phillips; husband John (Red) Oak; brother John Phillips and son Richard Oak. Survived by her sons John, Ken (Elaine); daughters Diane, Lisa (Al); grandchildren Brianne, Abby (Bryan), Kara (Matthew), Kim (Marcus), Tony (Reiann), Layne (Megan); step grand daughter Penny (Mark); great grandchildren Kenzlee, Lennon, Charlie, Jack, Mackinley, Lyra, and step grandchildren Nicholas and Julia. There will be a graveside service in the spring.
