Veronica Moore

Our feisty English Grandmother was called home on July 21, 2021. Veronica ‘Ronnie’ Moore entered this world on May 6th, 1923 at Paddington, London England. Curiosity and adventure seeking were encouraged at a young age, as children Grandma and her sister Margaret would navigate London’s underground, exploring museums, cathedrals, and the London Zoo. This tenacity was an essential ingredient to the challenges others of her generation would face… WWII.  Grandma starting nursing in 1940, being too young for official training she began in the children’s ward and would serve in a variety of nursing roles for the duration of the war.  In December of 1941, a young Canadian soldier decided to check out the local dance hall and two young people fell in love. On May 1st, 1943, Grandma married Gordon Hughes. The day was marked with a secondhand dress, recycled decorations, a wedding cake iced with melted chocolate bars sent over from Canada and navigating an air raid siren. The hardships were overlooked, and love conquered all, following a brief honeymoon it was a return to service. In March 1946, Grandma became one of the 44,000 Canadian war brides to leave all they knew and start a new life in Canada. Life began in Chaplin, with Gordon taking the position of Post Master. The years ahead formed the foundation of lifelong friendships as Grandma learned the ropes of life on the prairies. Tragedy struck in 1957, when Grandpa Gordon passed away following a battle with cancer. Grandma found herself widowed at age 32 and raising two young children. In an act of support, the Village of Chaplin petitioned Canada Post to offer Grandma the role of Postmistress. There is little doubt this act enabled Grandma to remain in Chaplin and raise Grant and Dawn. Over a decade later, another change was underway. Grandma married Marlin Moore and the next years were filled with travel, crafting, knitting the infamous ‘grandma sweaters’ for all her grandchildren. There were fishing trips, curling, and ensuring the work of the local Royal Canadian Legion continued. Veronica was also always proud to speak to the students of Chaplin School each Remembrance Day, and of course inviting the neighbours over for an afternoon tea using the ‘good china’ was a must. Following Marlin’s passing, Grandma decided it was time to downsize and move to Moose Jaw. A large extended family was created at Caleb Village. Grandma was thankful for those who kept a special eye on her personal needs as her advanced age started to slow her down. This classy, well dressed lady taught us all about how to be resilient, thoughtful, kind and use a bit of humour to get you through the tough times… plus a few words to live by; “Life is full of ups and downs, adventures and heart breaks all things can be enjoyed or weathered with the odd cup of tea!”. Veronica is survived by: Daughter-in-law Delia Hughes, grandchildren Clinton Hughes & Ross Hodgson, Alison Clarkson and her children Boe, Brett & Trewin Clarkson;  son-in-law John Young, grandchildren Mike & Shannon Krause & their children Justin, Jordon & Megan Krause, Chad & Roxanne Young & their son Matteo, Shauna Young & Jason Desnoyers and their daughter Destiney, Tasha and Matt Florek & their children Presley & Weston, Craig and Rheanna Young and their children Rylan, Kendall and Jett. Veronica was predeceased by her husband Gordon Hughes, husband Marlin Moore, son Grant Hughes and daughter Dawn Young. Grandma will forever live in our hearts and we shall strive to be as brave and as strong for our families as she was for us.
