Muriel Helen (Sisson) McDowell, age 89 years of Moose Jaw, SK passed away on Sunday, March 10th, 2019 at the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital, surrounded by her family and completing her commitment to the spiritual journey of one of her favourite Bible verses, Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

She was born on December 23rd, 1929 in Assiniboia to William and Bertha (Rawson) Sisson. Muriel grew up in Assiniboia with her six brothers: Jack, Joe, Harry, Em, Frank, and Ray, and sisters, Nora and Dorothy. In 1954, Muriel became a member of the Assiniboia Alliance Church and continued to be involved with the Alliance Church in Assiniboia and Moose Jaw for her entire life, working in the Sunday School office and coordinating funeral luncheons. For eight years she worked at the Assinboia Variety Store before moving to Moose Jaw in 1957, where she worked at a propane company and Singer Sewing. In Moose Jaw she attracted the eye of Keith Bertil McDowell and they were married on March 28th, 1958. They moved to their newly built farmhouse at Grayburn, SK where they began their family of three children. Muriel enjoyed many simple pleasures in life, always with a different craft or sewing project on the go (often crafting with friends) or reading, and watching curling and other sports. She enjoyed travelling, with her most loved trips to BC, Ontario and Assiniboia to visit family. She proclaimed that her favourite pastime was to be with her children and grandchildren. There are fond memories of Muriel and her son Glen planting flowers and gardening together, family dinners, and the grandchildren enjoying the many activities at Grandma’s house.

She was predeceased by parents; her brothers and sisters; husband, Keith; and son, Glen. Left to honour Muriel are her children, Dale (Janet) McDowell and Dianne (Garth) Purdy; devoted friend of Glen, Darwin Rosso; grandchildren: Miranda (Chris) Peters, Dallas McDowell (Carlynne), Nicole Purdy, and Michael Purdy (Calla); great-grandchildren: Harper, Madigan and Briar Peters; sisters-in-law, Vera Sisson and Lenore McDowell; as well as several nieces and nephews whom Muriel kept in contact with over the years.

Our special thanks to Moose Jaw Extendicare for the outstanding care Muriel received during her stay there, and to the Medical Unit at the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital for their compassion and sensitivity.

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 15th, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home with Pastor John Reimer officiating. We invite family, friends, and others whose lives Muriel touched to attend for the service and luncheon following to reminisce and, of course, chat. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Muriel’s name may be made to The Gideons International In Canada, PO Box 3619, Guelph, ON N1H 7A2. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Gary McDowell, Funeral Director 306-693-4550 www.moosejawfuneralhome.com
