Edith Elaine Johnston – Ryder
February 3, 1955 – June 3, 2023

After complications from a stroke, Edith Johnston-Ryder passed away peacefully, with her son and her sister by her side, on June 3, 2023 at the age of 68.

Edith was born and raised in Moose Jaw, SK; attending Alexander School, followed by Central Collegiate Institute. After graduating in 1972, she moved to Calgary, AB, to work as a Telephone Operator for Alberta Government Telephones. After three years, she returned to Moose Jaw and worked for a short period at SaskTel. In March 1977, Edith and her close friend Kim went on an adventure to attend Caribou Carnival Yellowknife, NT. They had so much fun, shortly after they decided to move there and found jobs. Their friend Berta joined them a few months later. Edith worked as a teller for TD Bank, a teller and Loans Officer for Bank of Montreal and finally found her spot at Workers Safety and Compensation Commission until retirement in June 2014.

Edith loved to garden; growing flowers, tomatoes and sometimes carrots. She had one of the best flower gardens in Yellowknife. She was also an avid reader, reading a variety of books and authors. This kept her busy during the winter hours when it was too cold to venture outside. Edith also enjoyed Happy Hour with her friends in Moose Jaw on many Friday nights, where there were lots of laughs and many stories told.

Edith met and married her best friend Murray Ryder on July 2, 1983 in Yellowknife. They adopted a Springer Spaniel named Joey first and then along came their son Graeme. Edith and Murray decided to live out their retirement years in Moose Jaw. Murray and Edith enjoyed 36 years of marriage.

Edith is survived by her son Graeme; her sister and best friend Lynn and husband Ed; numerous nieces and nephews and cousins; her lifelong friends Roberta Pilsner, Kim Poulter and Judy Fredeen. She also survived by her sisters -in-law Pauline (Bill) Justin, Patsy Bard, Susan Adams and brother-in- law Gerald (Lorraine) Ryder.

Edith was predeceased by her husband Murray Ryder; her parents W. Craig Johnston and H Enid Johnston; her in laws Gerald and Evelyn Ryder and her favourite dog, Joey.

For those wishing memorial donations may be made to the Royal University Hospital Foundation (Saskatoon) – Stroke Program.
