Clara Louise Janis

Clara Louise Janis (nee Hornung), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away with her family by her side on October 2, 2023 at Chateau St. Michael’s care home. Clara was born on October 26, 1934, the 3rd of 9 children. She was raised on a farm in the Vanguard area, receiving her education at Easby School. As a young girl she enjoyed playing ball and going to local dances, where she met the love of her life. On June 1, 1953 she married Joseph Janis and together they raised 5 children. They lived on their farm near Glen Bain where Mom grew a lovely large garden, raised chickens, and helped with the farm work. Mom was a talented cook and baker especially remembered for her buns, bread, angel food cakes, jelly rolls, perogies, cabbage rolls, and crispy fried chicken. When not in the kitchen, Mom could be found at her sewing machine, or keeping busy knitting, crocheting, or doing crossword puzzles.

In 1984, Mom and Dad semi-retired to Moose Jaw. Mom kept busy in the city volunteering at St. Anthony’s Home (now Chateau St. Michael’s) and Providence Place. She also enjoyed bowling, playing darts, and card games - especially the many games of Uno and Concentration with her grandchildren - and visiting with friends and family. Mom was a member of the St. Elizabeth and St. Joseph’s CWL, earning her 50-year service pin.

Clara was predeceased by her husband Joe in 2014. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Murray (Penny) Janis; Elaine Mulatz; Dianne Prentice (Chip); Collette Janis; and Joanne (Joe) Gregoire; 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; her brothers Robert (Audrey) and David (Jackie); sisters Jean, Elmerene, and Rita (Ron); sister-in-law Eleanor; brother-in-law Lawrence (Evelyn); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to the staff at Chateau St. Michael’s for the loving and compassionate care given to Mom while she was a resident there.

A Funeral Mass to celebrate Clara's life will be held on Tuesday, October 10th at 1:00 pm. at St. Joseph's Parish, 1064 3rd Avenue NW, Moose Jaw, SK. In lieu of flowers, donations in Clara's memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
