Sophie, first generation Canadian, was born and raised by Ukrainian parents on what is now classified as a ‘Century Family Farm’ having been established in 1911 in the Ituna, Saskatchewan area.
Because of extenuating circumstances, Sophie moved to the big city of Edmonton at age 15 to begin her journey as an independent woman. She was working as a waitress when she met the love of her life, Lawrence (Larry). Sophie and Larry were married January 22, 1955. Since Larry’s career was with the Canadian Armed Forces, they had the opportunity to move around the country, the US and Germany. While in Moose Jaw Sophie spent many years working at Safeway.
Sophie was a great homemaker, well known for her excellent cooking skills and accomplished at anything else she attempted to do. Sophie’s life was rich and rewarding with the interconnection of her daughter and son and their families. Sophie and Larry were super hosts, organizing many gatherings with family and friends. Sophie could be known as the life of the party. She had a great sense of humour, loved to sing and dance and would strongly encourage others to be involved in her ideas of fun. Needless to say, Sophie fell head over heals in love with all her grandkids and made effort to spend time with them.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Yvonne (Wayne) Marr, son Michael (Jocelyn) Hebert, 5 grandchildren: Cora (Colin), Eric (Rebecca), Matthew (Leilah), Kerry (Andy) and Nicholas, plus 8 great grandchildren (Brynn, Juliet, Rylan, Radly, Sam, Lakyn, Wylder and Sloane) plus numerous extended family members and friends.
Sophie was predeceased by her husband, Larry in 2010; her mother Eva and father Harasym and 11 older brothers and sisters.
Interment beside Larry is to take place in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan at a later date.
