DORIS EDNA HEARN (nee CRAWFORD)

It is with great sadness that the family of Doris Hearn announces her passing on Wednesday October 6th, 2021 at the age of 97 years. Doris was predeceased by her parents, all of her siblings, her husband, George, and her grandson, Ian. Doris is survived by her daughter; Barbara (Douglas) Currie, her grandchildren; Alan (Amanda) Currie and Maureen (Corwin Derkatch) Currie and her great grandchildren; Tieran and Alexia Currie and Lachlan Derkatch.

Doris was born on June 2, 1924 to Gus and Bertha (Franklin) Crawford. She grew up in the small farming community of Fortune four miles east of Rosetown and was part of a family of eleven children. Doris married George Hearn of Rosetown on June 4th, 1943 and they felt blessed when their chosen daughter came into their lives after ten years of marriage. The Hearn family made their life in Rosetown until 1979 when George and Doris moved to Penzance to be closer to their daughter. In 1982 they made the move to Moose Jaw and in 2015 Doris moved to Regina to live at College Park II retirement residence.

Doris was a keen sportswoman in her younger years. She played back catcher for a ladies softball team, and was an avid curler and golfer. She loved to watch hockey and baseball, even when her teams were not winning. She always looked forward to when curling season would start and in her later years, she enjoyed watching curling on TV.

Doris always had a passion for helping others and in every community she resided, she was active in that role. She belonged to the service clubs of the Rosetown Royal Purple and the Ladies Legion Auxiliary. In her early forties she began a senior citizen’s club in Rosetown because there were no activities for seniors in the area. She was also instrumental in the organization of the building of the Rosetown Senior Citizen’s Centre.

Doris always enjoyed socializing and playing cards. Friends were always over to play a few hands, which was a trend that she continued when she moved to Regina. George and Doris had the travel bug and went on many trips that she cherished.

To say Doris loved music was an understatement as she was one of those fortunate people that played piano by ear. She could hear a song and play it or change the key on the fly when needed.  She was one of the founders of the Rosetown Senior’s Choral Group and was their first pianist. In Moose Jaw she belonged to a couple of bands including  The Country Cousins who played for dances at the seniors centre and the Legion, and We Three Plus One who played at senior residences. At 90 she said she enjoyed playing for the “old people”. When she moved to Regina, Doris continued to play for Christmas concerts and church services at College Park II.

Doris’ biggest love was her family. She was always there for them to listen or assist in whatever way she could. She never gave unsolicited advice but when asked would gently state her thoughts. She was quiet in nature but fierce in determination and was thrilled when she became a grandmother, a grandmother-in-law and a great grandmother.

Special thanks to Dr. Lok, Dr. Van Heerde, Seniors House Calls, Home Care and all the staff of College Park II for their devoted friendship and care of Doris.

As per Doris’ request, no funeral will be held. The immediate family will be holding a private burial.

In lieu of flowers, donations In Memoriam may be made to a charity of your choice.
