Catherine (Kitty) Teresa Fitzgerald
Catherine (Kitty) Teresa Fitzgerald, 95 years old of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully at Providence Place on January 13, 2021. She was born in Highlake, Ballinaheglish, Co. Roscommon, Ireland on September 10, 1925 to Edward and Sarah Hayden. Growing up on the Hayden farm, Kitty loved to spend time outside with the animals, and over the years many dogs and cats came to reside as pets at the Fitzgerald home. After completing her schooling in Roscommon, she moved to England where she trained as a nurse and midwife and loved to tell stories of the hundreds of babies she delivered. While visiting Leeds, Kitty met a dashing young physician named Jerry Fitzgerald. They married in 1954 and spent many happy years together until his passing in 2011. In 1963, Jerry and Kitty and their two young sons, Jerry Jr. and John made the big move to Canada, first to Swift Current, where Paul and Jay joined the family, then to Moose Jaw in 1966. Kitty balanced raising four sons while supporting her busy husband by taking care of the phone for him while he was on call. Once the boys became more independent, she went to work at Jerry’s office until his retirement. Kitty enjoyed tending to her garden, camping, golfing, and being a firm believer in exercise, she swam and played badminton regularly. Kitty and Jerry travelled back to Ireland and England several times and enjoyed a few sunny vacations and cruises. Family gatherings for birthdays, anniversaries or any occasion were often spent with Kitty’s sister, Chris and the Beisel family, where Kitty’s mischievous side would occasionally emerge as she would regale the crowd with stories in dramatic fashion. She loved the party, and she loved her family! She was a generous, kindhearted and gracious woman whose faith was very important to her; she rarely missed mass and was a member of the CWL for many years. Kitty is survived by her sons Jerry (Jean) and their children Erin, Ryan (Lenna) and Sean (Anna-Stiina) and their sons, great-grandchildren Mio and Edvin, John, Paul (Noreen) and their children Kyle, Tara and Josh, and Jay (Marie) and their children Catlin and Allyson (Sage), her brother Frank Hayden (Florentine), sister-in-law Maureen Hayden, brother-in-law Mel Beisel and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Jerry, and siblings Maureen, Dolly, Christina, Sheila, Ida, Paddy Joe, Seamus, and her “Aunt” Bridget. The family wishes to thank Dr. J. Vermaak, the staff of Providence Place, West Park Crossing and Caleb Village for their loving care and attention over the last few years. Due to COVID-19 restrictions a private family funeral will be held at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church on January 16, 2021 with interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kitty’s memory to St. Joseph’s CWL or Providence Place.
