Roy Dickinson, our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully at the Moose Jaw Special Care Home on Friday, June 2, 2023, at the age of 96. Roy lived a long and abundant life beginning on February 17, 1927, in Keppel, SK. He finished grade school in Conquest, SK and then attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, graduating with a law degree in 1956. While articling in Moose Jaw with the Boris Dubinsky Law Office, Roy met the love of his life Elizabeth (“Betty”) Luedtke, marrying her in 1957. One year later, Roy was admitted to the Bar and acquired the law practice belonging to R J (Richard) Dickinson.
Even when busy practicing law, Roy believed passionately in civic and community service: he served multiple terms as a city alderman and as a member of the board of education, including multiple terms as chairman of the MJ public school board. Over the tenure of his working career, Roy continued pursuing additional civic responsibilities – serving as a member and chairman of the review panel for the Saskatchewan Training School, chairman of the advisory board to the commercial and secretarial division of the Saskatchewan Technical Institute, chairman of the MJ and District Ambulance Association, and serving as a Senator with the University of Saskatchewan Senate. Some of Roy’s many community memberships included the Rotary Society, the Moose Jaw Handicraft Centre, the Lions Club of MJ and Meals-on-Wheels (as a volunteer). In 2008, at the age of 81, Roy was awarded Senior Life Membership by the Law Society of Saskatchewan in recognition of his 50 years as a member.
Roy is predeceased by his wife, Betty, his brother, John (Mona) and his parents, Ranselear and Beatrice. He is survived by his sister, Carole, and his children, Mark (Monique) and Larry (Penny), and by his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Always hard working and never one to sit idle for very long, Roy is remembered for his friendly and welcoming manner, his over-reaching generosity, his love for Samoyed dogs, his tenacity at fixing or doing things himself (even when he shouldn’t), and his love of family.
A special thank-you goes to the staff at the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital and at the Moose Jaw Special Care Home who cared for Roy during his time of need. Your care and compassion are deeply appreciated. Also, special thanks to Dr. Waldner, Dr. Dautremont, and the caregiver staff at SHA Homecare.
No funeral/memorial service is currently planned, although a private family burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Saskatchewan Heart and Stroke Foundation, c/o 100- 119 14 Street NW Calgary, Alberta T2N 1Z6.
