JAMES (JIM) RUSSELL BLACK

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of James “Jim” Russell Black on Thursday, July 31st, 2025, at the age of 82 years. Born in Moose Jaw, SK on October 8th, 1942, Jim lived a life on his terms right till the end.

Jim worked many caretaker jobs over the years including the Post Office, Castle Wines, and the Catholic School Division. Jim met and married Elizabeth Klepsch and together they had one child, Penny.

Jim always had a passion for cars from a young age, which led him and Liz to many years racing stock cars, smashing cars in demolition derbies, and abruptly ending his Flagman’s career in 1980 when he was hit by a car while flagging from the track. In later years, Jim and Liz loved playing cribbage at the Legion every week.

Jim always had a soft spot for all animals, whether it be his pampered chickens and pea hens when they were on their acreage, or his dog Laddy. But his best four-legged friend right to the end was Bob, his cat. Together they shared a deep love of A&W burgers - double buddy burger, a patty for Jim and a patty for Bob.

Jim’s gruff exterior, sarcastic sense of humour, and constant teasing left a mark on anyone who met him.

He was predeceased by his wife, Liz; parents, Russ and Lillian; and his great friends, Bob Nelson and Ray Robinson. Jim is survived by his only child, Penny (Shaun) King; cherished grandsons, Grayson and Conor; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kurt and Carol Klepsch; and his friend for many years, Fred Douglas.

As per Jim’s wishes, a private family interment will be held at a later date beside Liz in the family plot. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s name may be made to The Moose Jaw Humane Society, Box 1658 Station Main, Moose Jaw, SK S6H 7K7, where they adopted Bob. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Andrew Pratt, Funeral Director 306-693-4550 www.moosejawfuneralhome.com
