Margaret Beattie Alm (nee Cargill) late of Moose Jaw, SK died in the early morning hours of December 31, 2021 just 22 days after we celebrated her 99th birthday.

Mom was born to William and Maggie Cargill on December 9, 1922, in Dundee, Scotland, the middle of three children.

On her many trips back to Scotland with Dad she loved to revisit places of her early years. Living through WWII in Scotland was instrumental in shaping her outlook on life (darning socks and never wasting food-into the soup).

Mom joined the RAF as a WAAF and told many stories of her time spent in the military.

Mom’s uncle had immigrated to Canada in the early 30’s and managed the Model Mink Ranch in Fort William. Dad worked at the mink ranch. When he was going overseas Bob Beattie told him to look up his family if he ever found himself in Dundee. Dad did just that and …and as they, the rest is history. Mom and Dad married in Dundee July 26, 1945. Dad returned on a troop ship and Mom followed with other war brides arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax on July 1, 1946. She travelled to Fort William, Ontario where dad was waiting in their new home. They moved to Welland Ontario and then travelled to Kellhiher, Saskatchewan to take over the family farm. They eventually relocated to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and were long time residents in the house that dad build on Connaught Avenue. They enjoyed years of round and square dancing with good friends. Mom’s main focus as my brother and I grew up, was family. She started working at the Moose Jaw Library in the late 60’s where she worked for over 20 years. She was an avid reader, family storyteller, great cook and famous for her homemade buns and shortbread. Mom wasn’t a driver until dad’s failing health necessitated her getting her driver’s license at age 71, a fact that she was very proud of. Mom and Dad were married for 50 years before dad’s passing in 1995. Mom did Tai Chi, line dance and exercise classes well into her 80’s and was a great lover of music.

Mom was predeceased by her parents; brother David (Joan) Cargill and sister Eleanor (Bill) Dryden; In-laws Olaf and Brita Alm; brothers in-law Olie, Rudy, Verner (Helen), Robert and Albert (Linda) Alm. She is survived by sisters-in-law Vi and Betty Alm.

Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma will be dearly missed by her children: Eleanor McGillivray and Brian (Yvonne Hotzak) Alm; her grandchildren: Craig (Heather) McGillivray, Kim MacLeod, Corry Alm, Kristin (Dale Hopkins) Alm and Brina (Andrew) Down; her great grandchildren: Ayla (Travis), Angus, Cece, Maeva, Tessa, Florence and Walter;  Angus’ father Charles MacLeod and Craig’s stepsons Bradley, Adam, Cory McInnis and their families. Cousins in Britain, South Africa, and Canada; nephews and nieces in Britain and Canada and extended family in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.

Mom spent the last three years of her life at Chez Nous Personal Care in Moose Jaw. She always told us that she was content there and grateful for the care she received. The family would like to thank Manon, Celeste, Kristin and all the staff for their kindness and compassion shown to Mom.

In lieu of flowers donations to Chez Nous or the Moose Jaw Humane Society would be appreciated by the family.

In keeping with Mom’s wishes no formal service will take place. A private family service will take place as Mom is laid to rest beside her husband at Prairie Memorial Columbarium.

In living memory of Margaret, a memorial planting will be made by W.J. Jones & Son Ltd. Please sign the memorial register at website: www.jonesparkview.com (Obituaries). Dayna Chamberlain - Funeral Director
