TORONTO — A U.K. company that tracks the performance of home internet connections around the world is asking for Canadians to share their data this summer.

SamKnows works with public and private-sector organizations in several countries, including Canada's CRTC.

SamKnows estimates that Canadians working from home lost about 19 minutes a day on average in 2020 due to internet speed issues.

It has put out a call for volunteers who are willing to install a free device that connects to home routers and sends anonymous data to SamKnows.

SamKnows hasn't disclosed how many Canadian users will qualify to have a home kit delivered to their home this year or who has commissioned the study

A CRTC report published last June by the regulator was based on SamKnows data collected from about 3,000 Canadian households in October 2019.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 21, 2021.
