WEYBURN -- The Moose Jaw Miller Express got back on the winning track on Friday night, taking a win over the Weyburn Beavers as they attempt to reel in the Regina Red Sox for third place in the East Division in the final weeks of the season.
Moose Jaw took a 13-6 win over the Weyburn Beavers in Weyburn, while the Regina Red Sox dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Mavericks in Medicine Hat, falling 3-0 and 7-3. The Saskatoon Berries continued to roll along with an 8-4 win over the Swift Current 57’s.
Box scores for the second game in Medicine Hat and the game in Swift Current were unavailable.
Moose Jaw 13, Weyburn 6
The teams found themselves in a close game with the Express leading 5-4 through five innings when Moose Jaw blew things open with six runs in the sixth. They’d tack on two more in the seventh to secure the win.
Andy Rivas had a good game at the plate for Moose Jaw, going 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs and a pair of runs batted in. Tanner DeGrazia was 3-for-5 with three runs while Thomas Soto went 3-for-6 with a pair of runs and three RBI.
Ryan Muizelaar had two hits, a home run and two runs scored for Weyburn, Ryan Dauphinee crossed the plate twice.
Joe Gutierrez started for Moose Jaw and allowed four runs on five hits over four innings, Abe Ahlberg picked up the win after allowing two runs on two hits in 2 ⅔ innings of relief.
Ethan Webster took the loss, giving up six runs on nine hits in 5 ⅓ innings.
The Miller Express improve to 21-26 and are now two games back of Regina for third place in the East Division. Weyburn falls to 12-34 and are 1 ½ games up on last place Swift Current.
Medicine Hat 3, Regina 0
The Mavericks received a stellar outing on the mound from Xander Roberts, as he’d toss a complete game shutout in the seven-inning contest.
Roberts would hold the Mavericks to only two hits in the process, striking out 10 and walking only one.
Ayden Page was the losing pitcher, giving up two runs on three hits over four innings. Calvin Shepherd gave up a single run while tossing the final two innings.
Adam Vulcano hit a double and scored two runs for the Mavericks, who had only four hits total themselves.
Matthew Fox and Brady Bye had Regina’s only hits.
Regina falls to 22-23 and have now lost seven straight to sit seven games back of second-place Medicine Hat. The Mavericks improve to 30-17 and are second in the East.
The Red Sox are back in action for another doubleheader on Saturday, with games at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Weyburn. Moose Jaw is in Saskatoon (6 p.m.) while Swift Current travels to Medicine Hat (7:05 p.m.)
