Warriors fall to Broncos in Swift Current

Early lead not enough as late second-period surge propels Broncos to 7-3 win
The Moose Jaw Warriors have seen their share of positive results through the first 18 games of the Western Hockey League season.

Their most recent contest was not one of those.

The Warriors surrendered six unanswered goals through the second and third period on their way to a 7-3 loss to the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday night in Swift Current.

The two teams came out of the first period tied 1-1 despite the Broncos holding a 20-5 lead on the shot clock, with Owen Hardy scoring the game’s first goal at the 6:08 mark before the Broncos’ Sergei Alkhimov tied things up with 2:11 to play.

Things couldn’t have looked better for the Tribe once play resumed after the first intermission: Brayden Tracey scored his 10th goal of the season at the 3:38 mark, and was followed 1:44 later by Ryder Korczak on the power play. With assists on the first two goals, Korczak now has 29 points in 18 games and sits eighth overall in WHL scoring.

As it turns out, that goal would mark the last bit of good news for the Warriors on the night.

After Jaxan Kaluski pulled the Broncos to within one, Brecon Wood, Ethan Regnier and Matthew Culling would all score in a span of 2:47 late in the period to put Swift Current ahead 5-3 heading into the third.

There, Aiden Bulych extended the lead to 6-3 before Kaluski capped a two-goal, two-assist night with an empty netter with 27 seconds to play.

Jackson Berry got the start in goal and turned aside 28 shots through two periods before giving way to Adam Evanoff, who stopped 10 shots in the final frame. Isaac Poulter went the distance in the Broncos goal, making 21 stops.

The Warriors fell to 9-8-1-0 with the loss and continue to hold the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Swift Current improved to 4-11-1-2.

The Warriors are back in action this Saturday afternoon when they face the Saskatoon Blades in Saskatoon. The contest will be broadcast on Sportsnet, with puck drop at 2:30 p.m.

Overtime… the contest marked the Western Hockey League debut of Maximus Wanner, with the AAA Warriors rearguard getting the ‘warm-up solo-lap’ treatment to start the game… the 6-foot-2, 165-pound defenceman was listed by the Warriors in 2018 and has a goal and 10 points with the AAAs this season.
