Vanier unbeaten through opening day at boys volleyball provincials

Central 1-1 at 4A championships, Cornerstone 1-1 at 3A tournament
The Vanier Vikings are off to exactly the kind of start they were hoping for as they attempt to defend their Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association 4A boys provincial volleyball championship.

Coming off their city championship win a little over a week ago and a commanding run through regionals, the Vikings are currently 3-0 after the first day of round robin action Friday in North Battleford.

Vanier opened the tournament with a 2-0 (25-11, 25-13) win over Melfort before sweeping Lumsden 2-0 (25-14, 25-16) and taking a 2-0 (25-19, 25-21) win over Saskatoon E.D. Feehan.

The Vikings close out the round robin against Saskatoon Marion Graham on Saturday morning, with the playoff round running throughout the afternoon.

The Central Cyclones are also in action in North Battleford and find themselves in the hunt after splitting a pair of hard-fought battles.

Central took on the host John Paul II Crusaders in their first game and came out on the short end of a hard-fought battle, falling 2-1 (25-17, 13-25, 15-6). It was more of the same in their second game against Sturgis, only with the reverse result: the Cyclones would take a 2-1 (25-17, 17-25, 16-14) win in the closest match of the event so far.

Central takes on Melville at 9 a.m. and Humboldt at 11 a.m. to finish their round robin draw; the top four teams from each five-team pool advance to the playoffs.

At the 2A boys championships in Wilkie, the Cornerstone Christian School Falcons are also 1-1 through action Friday.

Cornerstone opened with a 2-0 (25-17, 25-15) loss to Thunderchild but stayed in the playoff hunt by battling to a 2-1 (25-15, 12-25, 15-10) win over Hepburn.

The Falcons next face Arcola at 9 a.m., and Paradise Hill at 11 a.m. Saturday to wrap up round robin play. As in 4A, the top four teams in each pool advance to playoffs.

The bronze medal game in both tournaments is at 4:30 p.m., the gold medal games take place at 5:30 p.m.
