Peacock takes 91-30 win over Assiniboia, Cyclones down Vanier 64-30; Helping Hoops tourney this weekend
Both the Peacock Toilers boys and Central Cyclones girls posted comfortable wins as the Moose Jaw high school basketball season tipped off on Tuesday night.

For the Toilers, Devin Baumann led all scorers with 28 points as Peacock rolled to a 91-30 victory over the Assiniboia Rockets. Adam Blatchford added 15 points and Bryce Baumann 13 for the Toilers, who had all but two players put up points in the contest.

Assiniboia, meanwhile, was led by Derek Beaubien with 10 points.

In girls league action, Alexa Watterson scored 15 points and Nylah Seaborn added 14 as Central picked up a 64-30 win over the Spirits at Vanier.

Emily Blackmore added 13 points for Central, who led 16-6 after the first quarter and were up 36-14 at half.

Alexandra Marak was Vanier’s top scorer with a 10-point outing.

There will be plenty of boys basketball action this weekend, as Peacock will host their second annual Helping Hoops tournament Friday and Saturday.

The first edition of the event took place last December and saw the Toilers donate half their weekend gate to Extendicare, which went to the purchase of a new bench outside the local long-term care facility.

The beneficiaries this year will be Wakamow Valley.

Both the Toilers and Vanier Vikings will be in action during the eight-team tournament, with Peacok opening against Regina Johnson at 5 p.m. and Vanier duelling Balgonie Greenall at 5:30 p.m. The tournament consolation final and third-place game go at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, with the gold medal final set for 5 p.m.
