Sawchenko honoured by WHL

Former Warriors goaltender named Canada West WHL Graduate of the Month

When former Moose Jaw Warriors goaltender Zach Sawchenko decided to forego his overage season in the Western Hockey League in order to join the University of Alberta Golden Bears, he was hoping to see the next step in his hockey career get off to a good start.

Consider it done, and then some.

Sawchenko and the Bears would go on to win the USport championship in his rookie season, with the Business major picking up the win in the gold medal game. Things haven't slowed down since then, as he currently boasts a 15-2-0-1 record with a 1.49 goals against average.

Those kind of numbers attract attention, and after a 5-0-0 record through January, Sawchenko is now the reigning Canada West WHL Grad of the Month.

Through the five games, Sawchenko stopped 88 of the 92 shots he faced, recording a pair of shutouts along the way. Through 17 games played this season, Sawchenko has four shutouts, which is tied for the conference lead. His goals against average is the best in USport.

Alberta is currently on a 16-0-1 run -- including 11 straight wins -- for a 17-3-5-1 record, one point back of first place Saskatchewan.
