Saskatchewan Roughriders’ head coach Corey Mace provided an update on injured Canadian receiver Kian Schaffer-Baker.
"The plan is that he's going to play at some point this season until we've been told otherwise, but that has not been the conversation," Mace said.
"It's awesome seeing him, walking around and all that stuff. His personality is loud as ever, still the same thing. We definitely anticipate him playing some games for us this season, but with these injuries, there's never any promises. Certainly, everything's trending in that direction."
The six-foot-four, 195-pound receiver has only played one game for the Green and White in 2025. That game was against the Ottawa Redblacks, which the Riders won 31-26, even though Schaffer-Baker left in the first quarter.
Through his CFL career to date, Schaffer-Baker has only played one full 18-game regular season in his time with Saskatchewan. That was in his second season in 2022, when he caught 68 passes for 960 yards and five touchdowns.
The next game for the Riders will be against the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday, marking their first meeting of the year. Last season, the Riders lost to the Alouettes twice, first 20-16 in Week 8 and then 27-24 in Week 11.
"They have a really good atmosphere, their fan base comes out to support the team," Mace explained.
"No matter where you play, you're always in for a tough battle versus those guys, but specifically there. It's always been in my recent memory a tough place to play."
Mace knows he needs to look out for Alouettes' American receiver Tyler Snead, who leads Montreal with 440 receiving yards.
"It's good that the kid is starting to get a little bit of love. Throughout the last couple of years, specifically last year, you can see that he's a playmaker and a security blanket for the quarterbacks over there," Mace said.
"Other than that, he works his tail off. He's not the biggest guy, but he's got a big heart, you can tell by watching the film and being a reliable guy. Certainly, it's caught our attention, but they've got a lot of other good players."
You can catch the pre-game show on Saturday with Teagan Witko, Justin Dunk and Wes Cates at 2 p.m. Dave Thomas and Luc Mullinder have the game call at 5 p.m. You can hear extensive coverage on the 620 CKRM Co-operators Rider Broadcast Network.
