Pee Wee, Bantam Mavericks lose playoff contests

Bantams fall in double overtime in South final series, Pee Wees lose first game of South semifinal

It wasn’t the best of days for the Moose Jaw Mavericks in South Saskatchewan Female Hockey League action on Sunday afternoon.

Both the Pee Wee and Bantam teams took losses in their respective playoff contests, as the Mavericks dropped a 7-3 decision to the Southwest Cyclones in the Pee Wee South Division semifinal, while in the Bantam South Division final, the Mavericks fell 4-3 to the Parkland Fire in double overtime.

Taking the ice in Gull Lake, the Pee Wee Mavericks had goals from Brooklyn Hrynkiw, Jesse Mielke and Brooklyn Nimegeers but would be unable to keep pace with the undefeated Cyclones as they trailed 3-2 after the first and 6-3 through two.

Schay Camphaug was in goal for Moose Jaw

The Mavericks trail their best-of-three semifinal 1-0, with Game 2 tonight at the Red Knight Arena (7:30 p.m.) and Game 3, if necessary, Mar. 16 in Gull Lake.

For the Bantam Mavericks, an impressive comeback fell short as the two teams played their second double overtime contest in as many games.

Jadyn Palaschuk got Moose Jaw on the board in the first period, but Parkland scored three straight goals in the second to take a 3-1 lead. Sidney Ellingson got one back with 7:45 remaining before Eowyn Stokes tied the game with 32 seconds to play in regulation.

The Fire scored the game winner five minutes into the second overtime.

Brooke Archer went the distance in goal for the Mavericks.

Game 3 of their series takes place Mar. 17 at the Red Knight Arena (1:30 p.m.).
