Minor football kicks off new campaign with full slate of games

Season-opening barbecue highlights busy day of action at Elks Field

The Moose Jaw Minor Football League campaign is officially underway, with the opening games of the season taking place all day Saturday at Elk's Field.

Hundreds of parents and fans were on hand throughout the day and were sure to support the opening weekend barbecue, with all proceeds from the event going minor football. There were also a host of prize giveaways, including a signed Gene Makowsky jersey.

The game also marked the first contests played under the new age and player rules, with divisions now spanning U10, U12 and U14 age groups, as well as all games featuring nine players a side, better known as nine-man football.

The early results were especially good for Moose Jaw squads, as in Under-12 division the Moose Jaw Lions rolled to a 42-7 win over the Assiniboia Rockets and the Moose Jaw Spartans battled to a 32-14 victory over the Estevan Chargers.

The first Under-14 game of the day saw a low-scoring scrap through the opening half before the Moose Jaw Razorbacks poured on the offence after the break, taking a 52-0 win over the Estevan Oilers.

Other U14 games later in the day saw the Moose Jaw Vikings take a 44-15 victory over the Weyburn Ravens and the Weyburn Falcons battle to a 12-0 victory over the Moose Jaw Raiders.

Here's a selection of photos from the second and third games of the day!
