Minor AAA Miller Express rally late but fall short against Kiwanis

Moose Jaw scores 11 runs over final three innings but drop 15-12 decision at Baba Diamond
The Moose Jaw Miller Express threw a heck of a scare into the Regina Kiwanis Cubs in their Little League Minor AAA season opener on Wednesday night, but fell just short of pulling off an impressive comeback.

The Millers scored 11 runs over the final three innings but would go on to drop a 15-12 decision at Farris Baba Diamond.

Things didn’t get off to a great start for the local squad, as they’d manage to pick up only one out before Regina scored the maximum six runs in the first inning. The Cubs tagged on two more in the third inning and a further six in the fourth to lead 14-1 heading into the Express half of the inning.

Momentum swung decidedly in Moose Jaw’s favour from there, as they’d pour six runs of their own across the plate in the bottom of the fourth, and after holding Regina to a single run in the fifth, added another four to close within striking distance 15-11 heading into the final frame.

The Express would bring the lead-off hitter home to pull within three but would be retired in order the rest of the way to close out the loss.

Vieko Smith reached base three times and scored a pair of runs to lead Moose Jaw’s offence. Damon Baxter also reached three times and scored a single run while twice advancing to third.

Evan Audette, Dalton Stephens and Quinn Roberts also had two runs apiece.

The Minor AAA Express are back in action Friday when they host the Regina Flying Squirrels. Game time is 6:15 p.m. at Gamble Diamond.
