Mavericks win opening game of playoff series

Mielke, Nimegeers each have seven-point outings as Moose Jaw takes 14-2 win over Swift Current

The Moose Jaw Mavericks didn’t leave much to doubt in the first game of their Saskatchewan Female Hockey League Pee Wee division playoff series with the Swift Current Ice Cats.

The Mavericks took a 3-0 lead out of the first period and led 6-2 through two before pouring in eight goals in the third on their way to a 14- 2 victory.

The win gives the Mavericks a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series.

Brooklyn Nimegeers kicked off the scoring frenzy with a natural hat trick in the first period on her way to finishing the game with five goals and two assists. Jesse Mielke also had a solid showing, scoring three times and adding four helpers. Sadie Hughes scored twice and added three assists, Brooklyn Hrynkiw and Ashley Breitkreuz picked up two goals apiece.

Schay Camphaug turns aside 41 shots in earning the win, the Mavericks fired 50 at Swift Current.

Game two of the series takes place Tuesday in Swift Current.
