Mosaic Place will be turning purple coming up on Saturday when the Moose Jaw Warriors host their first ever Hockey Fights Cancer night.

"Everybody I know has been touched by cancer in some way, shape or form, and that’s what this night is, it’s an all-encompassing of all the cancers," said Corey Nyhagen, the Warriors’ director of business operations.

"We’re a community-owned team, we’re very well supported by the entire community and surrounding area, so we’re always looking at initiatives that can really impact everybody."

Hockey Fights Cancer was founded in 1998 by the National Hockey League and, since its inception, the initiative has raised more than $20-million to support cancer programs.

All the funds raised on Saturday night will be staying in Moose Jaw to support cancer programs in the city.

"We’ve been involved in prostate cancer and breast cancer awareness, but this one literally touches on all cancers," Nyhagen said. "This was something that we wanted to bring to our fan base, an opportunity to raise some funds that can stay right here in Moose Jaw and help something that touches the lives of everybody here in Moose Jaw."

Purple is the colour of the night; the Warriors’ players will be sporting purple tape on their sticks and the colour will be featured around the arena throughout the night.

"It’s our intention to turn the entire arena purple for that night," Nyhagen said.

The Warriors have partnered with CAE for the initiative and cadets will be on hand to sell 'I Fight For' cards throughout the night.

"We’re going to put them up around the entire arena and hopefully fill the walls," Nyhagen said. "We’re not looking for a lot, it’s a couple of dollar donation."

In addition to the 'I Fight For' cards, the Warriors will be also holding some special auctions throughout the game.

"There’s a couple things that we’re going to be doing with some auctions for that night with game-worn [jerseys], as well the players are going to be using [special] tape on their sticks and if I can get my hands on a few of those, I want to be auctioning those off as well," Nyhagen said.

A portion of every walk-up ticket sold for the game will also be donated to the initiative, "So by coming to the game, you’re going to be a part of something bigger," Nyhagen added.

The Warriors face-off with the Medicine Hat Tigers for the Hockey Fights Cancer night on Saturday. Get your tickets at the Mosaic Place Box Office.
