First week of Canada Summer Games nears end as local athletes continue to see action

Lin, Team Sask tennis defeat Newfoundland in consolation round; Shymko, Sask lacrosse lose 5-3 to New Brunswick in 7th/8th place game; Newberry, Simmons finish fourth in fastball with 5-4 loss to Ontario; Arnott and Chartrand wrap up events in the pool

Makena Simmons and Katie Newberry came within a single win of playing for a medal at the Canada Summer Games in Niagara, Ont. on Thursday night.

Instead, a late-game comeback saw Ontario take a 5-4 victory over Saskatchewan in the women’s fastball competition, and as a result, they’ll settle for a fourth-place finish.

Team Sask got off to a great start, scoring a run in the bottom of the second and following up with a pair in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Ontario would rally in the sixth, scoring four runs to take a 5-4 edge, and while Saskatchewan would score a run in the bottom of the seventh and get the tying run to second, they’d fall just sort of the comeback.

Simmons finished 0-for-4 at the plate, on the few games on the week where she didn’t have at least a hit. Newberry didn’t see action on the mound.

Harry Lin and the Saskatchewan tennis team pulled off a narrow win over Newfoundland in their match on Friday morning and will face Nova Scotia in the fifth-place game on Saturday afternoon.

Lin had played men’s singles throughout the round robin and qualification round but was slotted into men’s doubles against Newfoundland. He and partner Nicholas Presenti would drop a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Peter Drover-Crane and Aiden Drover Mattinen, but Saskatchewan would find a way to get things done and go on to a 4-3 win.

Mykenzie Shymko and Team Saskatchewan will finish in eighth place at the Canada Summer Games after dropping a 5-3 decision to New Brunswick in the seventh-place game.

Shymko -- the Moose Jaw Mustangs lacrosse product who served as captain for Saskatchewan at the tournament -- scored Saskatchewan’s final two goals of the event.

Both goals came in the third period, with Shymko scoring a 10:57 and 18:13 as Team Sask attempted to rally from 5-1 deficit.

Saskatchewan trailed 2-0 after the first and 5-1 through two.

Moose Jaw Flying Fins competitors Makaya Arnott and Damian Chartrand wrapped up their appearances in the pool on Thursday evening.

Arnott competed in the 50m backstroke and touched the wall in 35.27 to finish fourth in her heat and 42nd overall. Regina’s Alex Olfert had Team Sask’s top showing, finishing 11th.

Chartrand swam in the 50m freestyle and was fifth in his heat, finishing in 43rd place. Saskatoon’s Obi Nguyen led Saskatchewan’s efforts with a 16th-place finish.
