Canucks hosting 18U provincials this weekend

Moose Jaw coming off second-place league finish, plays first game Friday in six-team AA Tier I tournament
The Moose Jaw 18-and-under Canucks will be looking to become the latest team to make the most of playing for a provincial championship on their home field.

And wouldn’t you know it, they’ve picked a perfect time to be playing some of their best ball of the season.

The Canucks are coming off a second-place finish in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League Midget AA championship this past weekend, where they posted a 4-1 record despite playing five games in three days.

Moose Jaw opened with a 9-2 victory over the Lumsden Cubs before taking three straight one-run victories – 6-5 over the Prince Albert Royals, 13-12 over the Estevan Brewers and 11-10 over the Swift Current 57’s – to advance to the gold medal final Sunday. Playing their third game of the day, the Canucks simply ran out of gas and dropped a 15-0 decision to the Saskatoon Blue Jays in the league title game.

The Canucks open provincials Friday at 1 p.m. when they take on the Regina Pacers at Ross Wells Park. They’ll have most of the day off Saturday before facing the Battlefords at 6 p.m. and Saskatoon Blue Jays at 9 p.m.

Playoffs begin with tiebreakers on Sunday morning at 8 a.m., semifinals at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and final at 5 p.m. If there are no tiebreakers, semifinals will be at 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. and the gold medal game at 3 p.m.

It's been an impressive couple of weeks for Moose Jaw baseball teams, as the Little League Major AAA All-Stars are currently preparing for the Little League Canadian Championship after their Prairies championship victory on July 17 and the Moose Jaw Prairie Dogs are coming off a Baseball Sask provincial win in the 11-and-under AA Tier II tournament this past weekend.

All Sunday games are at Ross Wells Park.
