Busy weekend for Novice lacrosse teams

League, tournament games see plenty more wins for local squads
The Moose Jaw Novice Mustangs saw plenty of success for both of their programs over the weekend

For the Novice 1 Mustangs, it was a silver medal finish at the Lethbridge Floorbusters Memorial Tournament while the Novice 2 Mustangs picked up a win, tie and loss in three South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League contests in two days.

Novice 1 Mustangs 8 Brooks Drillers White 7

The Mustangs opened the Floorbusters tournament with the closest of contests, as Caiden Arnott scored his fourth goal of the game with 3:25 remaining in the first overtime period to take the 8-7 victory.

Luke Turner added three goals and an assist for the Mustangs, who led 3-2 after the first and trailed 4-3 after the second. The game featured plenty of dramatics in the third, as Brooks took the lead with 3:52 remaining, only to see Arnott tie the game with 1:18 to play.

Novice 1 Mustangs 5, Cranbrook Black 2

Things were far more comfortable in the Mustangs’ second game, as they took a 3-1 lead out of the first period and never looked back.

Turner led the way with a hat trick, with single goals from the sticks of Chase Folk and Tate Bollinger.

Novice 1 Mustangs 8, Lethbridge 2 Cudas 5

The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead out of the first period and led 6-4 through two in their final round robin game.

Turner was at it again with four goals and an assist, while Arnott picked up a goal and an assist. Folk once again opened scoring for the local squad, Jackson Voth and Landin Wrubleski had one goal each. Odin Graham picked up a pair of assists.

Lethbridge 1 Cudas 3, Novice 1 Mustangs 1

Reid Yeroschak continued his stellar play throughout the weekend in goal, but the Mustangs offence came up just short in the gold medal game.

Arnott had the lone goal for Moose Jaw, who trailed 1-0 after the first and 2-1 through two, keeping in touch with the hometown Cudas despite taking the floor with only nine runners.

Novice 2 Mustangs 8, Estevan 5

The Mustangs 2 opened their weekend by scoring four goals in the first period in Estevan, only to see the Big Dogs make things interesting with a four-goal outburst of their own that closed the contest to 5-4.

Kashton Smith recorded a hat trick in the contest, with Aiden McGillvray scoring twice, Hayden Nidesh adding a goal and an assist, Troy Maltais and Kysen Mac Angus both picking up single goals.

Novice 2 Mustangs 5, Swift Current TT 5

The Rampage scored the game tying goal with 15 seconds remaining, just over a minute after Nidesh had given his team a 5-4 lead.

Smith added three more goals and an assist to his season tally, McGillvray scored their other marker.

Swift Current MW 7, Novice 2 Mustangs 3

The Rampage took a 2-1 lead out of the first and scored a pair of goals in the second while holding the Mustangs scoreless in the period to take control of the contest.

Smith had a goal and an assist, McGillvray and Evan Berg single markers.

Jordan Ebbett and Elizabeth Deans split goaltending duties throughout the weekend.
