The Moose Jaw Mavericks are moving on to the second round of the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League Bantam playoffs.
Sidney Ellingson and Jesse Mielke each scored twice and Paytin Copeland added a goal and two assists as the Mavericks rolled to a 6-1 win over the Estevan Bearctss in Game 2 of their best-of-three South Division quarter-final series. The victory – combined with their 9-4 win last Sunday – gave the Mavericks a two-games-to-none sweep of the series.
Moose Jaw was the overwhelming favourite going into the first round, having posted a 22-0-0 record through the regular season to enter the playoffs as the top seed in the South Division. The Bearcats were the eighth seed at 6-11-5.
Eowyn Stokes added a goal and an assist for Moose Jaw, who led 2-1 after the first and 4-1 through two. Brooke Archer went the distance in goal to earn the win.
The Mavericks will now await the winner of the series between the Regina Renegades (9-11-2) and Regina Bisons (17-5-0), with that series currently tied 1-1.
