Alarie scores overtime winner as Warriors pick up first pre-season victory

Warriors first-round Bantam Draft pick finishes with four points against Saskatoon Blades
Don’t look now, but Moose Jaw Warriors rookie Eric Alarie is leading the Western Hockey League in scoring.

Sure, it might only be the pre-season. And half the teams in the league haven’t even wrapped up their training camps yet. But there’s little question the 16-year-old Winnipeg product is off to a nice little start to the 2019-20 WHL campaign.

Alarie finished the game with two goals and two assists, with linemate Ryder Korczak picking up a goal and a pair of helpers as the Warriors took a 4-3 overtime victory over the Saskatoon Blades during the Regina pre-season tournament at the Brandt Centre on Saturday afternoon.

The contest was a far cry from the loss to Swift Current one day earlier, where the Broncos scored four goals in the opening 10 minutes and never looked back.

This time around, the contest was scoreless through the first period before Korczak scored his first of the exhibition campaign with 5:26 remaining in the second period, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead through two.

That set the stage for a wild third, beginning with Tyler Ho and Tristen Robbin scoring goals for Saskatoon just over two minutes apart to take a 2-1 edge early in the frame.

Alarie picked up his second of the pre-season only 29 seconds after Robbin’s go-ahead marker, and the score remained tied until Cameron Sterling scored on the power play with 2:23 remaining to give the Warriors a 3-2 lead.

As the final score would indicate, things weren’t done there. Ryan Hughes tied the game once again with 1:03 remaining, with his shorthanded marker sending the contest into overtime.

The extra frame didn’t last long, as Alarie scored the overtime winner only 38 seconds into three-on-three action.

Alarie now has three goals and seven points in three pre-season contests.

Charlie Wright added two assists for the Blades.

Brett Mirwald picked up the win in goal, turning aside 26 shots, while Koen MacInness faced 41 shots for Saskatoon.

The Warriors finished the game 1-for-7 on the power play, Saskatoon was 0-for-2.

The Tribe return to action in Prince Albert against the Raiders on Wednesday before hosting Prince Albert on Sept. 7. Game time is 7 p.m. at Mosaic Place.
