Weekly walking program picking up interest

Every Thursday night, a group of walkers meets at the Salvation Army Church on Wintergreen drive for a satisfying two-mile walk — indoors.

The group follows along to a guided video from Leslie Sansone, taking time to warm-up before and cool down after, and spends about an hour enjoying some low-impact exercise.

Major Wendy Broome, one of the organizers of the group, is excited to see people stop in.

“I'm really been quite impressed with how it's gone. Its main purpose is really to reach out to the community,” said Broome. “It's lots of fun. We're getting about an average of 14 [people] right now, but we're open to having more people that want to come.”

The video actually takes you on a five-mile routine, but the group found two miles to be the right length and amount of exercise for them.

“We just decided it would be kind of a neat way to sort of reach out to the community and to provide a bit of an exercise program,” said Broome. “Originally, we were going to do it every other week or once a month. Then we had one week and everybody decided that they'd like to do it every week.”

Anyone is welcome to join the group, and Broome hopes to see some new faces stopping in for the future; they meet every week on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
