One extra month of garbage collection in the fall is now official after city council approved an amendment to the waste management bylaw.

During its Jan. 24 regular meeting, council gave three unanimous readings to the bylaw amendment. This means that residential waste collection will occur weekly in October instead of biweekly. This extra month of weekly garbage pickup will cost city hall $22,013, while households will pay $9.99 per month for monthly collection this year.

All other waste disposal fees and penalties will remain the same.

Council approved a motion during its 2022 budget discussions to implement this program for an extra month in the fall.

The current cost per month for monthly garbage collection is $9.79, so the new cost is a 20-cent increase, Coun. Heather Eby said.

“I hope this satisfies those in the community who have been asking for this (extra month),” she added. “I would have preferred to see garbage collection in May as well, but I’m happy to see us doing it in October, for sure.”

The next regular council meeting is Monday, Feb. 14.
