WCBL Recap: Moose Jaw, Saskatoon win in extra innings, Swift Current downs Regina for second win

Miller Express take 12-11 over Okotoks, Berries get past Medicine Hat 5-4, 57’s take 9-4 victory over Red Sox

MOOSE JAW -- It was a good time for extra baseball in the Western Canadian Baseball League on Wednesday night

Both the Moose Jaw Miller Express and Saskatoon Berries went to extra innings on their way to picking up home field victories, while the Swift Current 57’s came away with their second win of the season by downing the Regina Red Sox.

Moose Jaw returned to the win column by defeating the Okotoks Dawgs 12-11, with Saskatoon putting together a come-from-behind 5-4 win over the Medicine Hat Mavericks and Swift Current taking a 9-4 win over Regina.

Moose Jaw 12, Okotoks 11

Evan Deringer came up with the big hit for Moose Jaw in the 10th, with his single knocking home Jacob Glazener from third with the game-winning run.

The victory was the culmination of a steady comeback in the late innings that saw Moose Jaw overcome an early 7-4 deficit before finally tying the contest in the eighth inning.

Will Edwards had an outstanding game for the Express, finishing a home run away from the cycle by going 5-for-6 with three doubles, a triple, three runs scored and a pair of runs batted in, boosting his batting average to .396 on the campaign. 

Austin Gurney also turned in a solid showing with a 3-for-6 effort that included three runs and two RBI.

Benito Bonilla led the Dawgs with a 2-for-4 outing that included two home runs, three runs and two RBI. Steven Eisner also hit a round tripper for Okotoks.

Kam Sparrowhawk got the start for Moose Jaw and settled down after giving up five runs in the first inning, finishing with six runs allowed on six hits over four frames. Nathan PIsio ended up with the win, giving up a single run in the final 2 ⅔ innings.

Alex Oliver gave up two runs on four hits in the final 1 ⅓ to take the loss for Okotoks. Nate Charlton started and allowed four runs over three innings before giving way to three relievers, who allowed a pair of runs each.

Moose Jaw improved to 5-6 and are fourth in the East Division, Okotoks fell to 7-5 and are second in the West.

Saskatoon 5, Medicine Hat 4

The Berries trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth but would send three runs across the plate to tie the game, culminating when Nate Houston scored on a passed ball. That set the stage for extra innings, where Jalen Freeman knocked home Nomar Prieto with the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th.

Cory Wouters went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI for Saskatoon, Ethan Menard had a double as his single hit but knocked in two runs in the process.

Carter Roth and Aaron Vulcano were each 3-for-5 for Medicine Hat.

Merek Yeager turned in a quality start for Saskatoon, allowing two runs, one earned on six hits over six innings while striking out four. Zac Laird picked up the win after pitching a scoreless 11th.

Tyler Spruiell tossed three scoreless innings in his start for the Mavericks, Luis Diaz allowed four runs over four innings and A.J. Doll pitched three scoreless before Luke Barrientos gave up the game-winning run.

Saskatoon is now 9-2 and in first in the East, Medicine Hat is 9-4 and in second.

Swift Current 9 Regina 4

The 57’s built a 4-0 lead in the middle innings and held off a late comeback by the Red Sox with three more in the eighth to secure their second victory of the campaign.

Silas Hilton led Swift Current with a 4-for-6 outing that included a double and three runs scored, Gus Koehn was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Wilmer Henriquez, Donovan Borg and Rydell Adair all had two hits, a run scored and an RBI apiece.

Rafael Jackson went 3-for-4 with two runs to lead Regina, Jalen Seward went 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Adam Korte had a quality start for Swift Current, giving up only two runs on eight hits over 6 ⅔ innings. Broderick Bornstein gave up two runs in the seventh before Jaylen Gutierrez closed things out.

Holden Hungerford was the losing pitcher, allowing four runs, two earned, over five innings of work while striking out seven. Ayden Page gave up a single run over the next two innings, Vittorio Iacobucci surrendered four runs over the final two innings.

Swift Current improved to 2-9 and sit sixth in the East, Regina fell to 6-4 and are in third.

Action Thursday sees Saskatoon at Brooks, Regina at Weyburn and Okotoks rematching Moose Jaw, with all three game at 7:05 p.m.
