It is Halloween, which means that kids of all ages will be dressed in costumes and going door-to-door looking for candy.

While trick-or-treating is a lot of fun, it is also important to keep safety in mind. Fortunately, SGI has provided a number of tips to keep kids and drivers safe this evening.

Tips for drivers

  • Keep in mind that pedestrians have the right of way at marked and unmarked crosswalks, so stop before entering the intersection;
  • Be prepared to stop, as kids may be distracted and it they may be difficult to see in the dark;
  • Reduce your speed in residential neighbourhoods, especially school and playground zones;
  • Look for pedestrians when passing a stopped vehicle;
  • Pay attention when turning — don’t forget to look for pedestrians crossing in front of you;
  • Ensure your headlights and tail lights are on at dusk so pedestrians can see you more easily;
  • Don't drink and drive. If you attend an event that serves alcohol, plan a safe and sober ride home.

Tips for trick-or-treaters

  • Don’t wear masks or costumes that obstruct your vision;
  • Wear reflective clothing or carry a flashlight so you are visible to drivers;
  • Trick-or-treat on one side of the street at a time, as crossing back-and-forth across the street can be dangerous;
  • Look both ways before crossing the street and use crosswalks;
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street to make sure they see you and are stopping for you;
  • Avoid distractions while walking, including smartphones and headphones;
  • Use sidewalks or pathways wherever possible. If you have to walk on the road, walk on the shoulder of the left lane, facing oncoming traffic. Be sure to obey the “walk” and “don't walk” signals at controlled intersections.

Be sure to have fun tonight, whether you are out trick or treating, staying home to hand out candy, or attending a party!
