Matthew Savoie was named the WHL Player of the Week after his first game in a Warriors uniform.

Well, that didn’t take long.

Moose Jaw Warriors forward Matthew Savoie was named the Western Hockey League player of the week on Monday after his stellar debut in a Moose Jaw uniform last Saturday night.

Facing the Vancouver Giants, Savoie put up two goals and five points as the Warriors rolled to a 7-2 victory at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.

The Buffalo Sabres first-round draft pick was playing in his first game since joining the Warriors in a trade that sent seven WHL Draft picks to the Wenatchee Wild.

Savoie spent most of the first part of the season with the Sabres but was returned to Wenatchee on Nov. 11. He’s been on a tear ever since, with 13 goals and 29 points in 12 games, leading the WHL in points-per-game with 2.42. He’s only been held off the scoresheet once this season.

The honour marks the fourth time a member of the Warriors has been named player of the week, after Jagger Firkus won the honour on Oct. 2 and Oct. 30, while Jackson Unger was the goaltender of the week on Dec. 4.

The Warriors are back in action Wednesday night when the Lethbridge Hurricanes are in town. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.
