With the way things have been going with the pandemic and the Western Hockey League in recent weeks, it seemed like only a matter of time.

And now the bad news has hit home for the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The WHL announced Tuesday the Warriors, along with the Edmonton Oil Kings and Red Deer Rebels, have paused team activities as a result of multiple players and staff being added to the COVID-19 protocol list. Those affected are exhibiting symptoms or have tested positive for COVID-19.

As a result, the Warriors’ games at Lethbridge on Friday, Jan 7 and at Medicine Hat on Saturday, Jan. 8 have both been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.

That, on top of the game in Winnipeg on Monday, Jan. 3 that was postponed due to the Manitoba government instituting crowd restrictions in the province.

The pause means all team activities, including on-ice practices and off-ice training, are on hold pending further test results.

The pandemic hit the WHL hard over the holidays.

On Jan. 1, the league announced the Hurricanes had paused team activities, two days after the Swift Current Broncos had done the same.

Those decisions came a day after the Manitoba government’s decision, which reduced crowd sizes to 250 people in the province and saw the Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg Ice pause home games for the time being.

Also on Dec. 29, Portland and Tri-City postponed a game due to injuries and COVID protocols surrounding their goaltenders.

The league announced on Dec. 27 that 17 teams had players or staff come down with COVID-19. That included an individual on the Warriors.
