The Moose Jaw Warriors will be taking a new direction with the annual Teddy Bear Toss this year.
What started on a cold winter’s night in Kamloops in 1993 has become a Christmas tradition in hockey rinks all over North America.

But just how do you hold a Teddy Bear & Toy Toss when there are no games to be played, and the hockey rink is literally shut down due to an ongoing pandemic?

Simple — you just have fans drop off their new and unused plush and other toys throughout the day, rather than have a mass gathering that could lead to the spread of COVID-19.

The Moose Jaw Warriors will be taking exactly that approach next week, when they hold their 2020 Teddy Bear & Toy Toss at Mosaic Place and Murray GM. The difference this year is the throw will be a little shorter than from the 10th row and over the glass: just a quick little flip into the back of  a truck.

On Monday, Nov. 30, the Moose Jaw Warriors truck along with vehicles from Murray GM and the Salvation Army will gather from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Mosaic Place parking lot, Supporters can drop off their teddy bears and other items at that time.

The Teddy Bear ‘Toss’ will move to Murray GM on Tuesday, Dec. 1, and will once again run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

““Murray GM is again proud to be a supporter of the Moose Jaw Warriors Hockey Club and the Salvation Army with the annual Teddy Bear & Toy Toss,” commented Darroch Cairns, Murray GM sales manager.  “The entire team here at Murray’s is so pleased to be able to support the event again this year.”

All the gathered items will be donated to the Salvation Army, supplementing their gathering of toys from throughout the year — including the wildly popular Toy Run earlier this fall — and helping to make Christmas just a little brighter for children this Christmas.

“This event in the past has been a great support to the Salvation Army and the local community,” said Cadet Lester Ward with the Moose Jaw Salvation Army.  “This year the need is even greater than in the past. Toys requested for all age groups up to age 14, mitts, scarves, and toques would also be greatly accepted.”

Supporters are asked to place all items in plastic bags to ensure they’re kept clean and safe, and individuals are also reminded to comply with all Sask Health Authority guidelines regarding COVID-19.
