The Moose Jaw Junior Mustangs were right there with the Regina Barracuda for two periods in Prairie Gold Lacrosse League action on Wednesday night.

It was the one period where things weren’t close that made all the difference.

The Barracuda outscored Moose Jaw 8-3 in the second period and would go on to a 14-10 victory at the Kinsmen Arena.

Things were exceptionally close in the early going, as the Mustangs overcame a 4-1 deficit at the 8:37 mark of the first period with three straight goals, sending the two teams into the dressing room tied 4-4.

Two quick goals got Regina going early in the second period, though, and by the time the smoke cleared, the Barracuda had a 12-7 lead heading into the final frame.

Moose Jaw got within a pair with 6:45 to play, but Regina tacked on a pair of insurance markers late to finish things off.

Braxton Mac Angus led Moose Jaw with four goals and eight points on the night, while Josh Johnson had a hat trick and four points. Nick Huntley added a goal and three assists to go along with a goal and three points from Jacob Gyman. Brennan Blatz had their other marker.

Lucas Sallikin contributed a pair of assists.

Kenton Appel did most of the damage for Regina, putting up seven goals and finishing with nine points.

The Mustangs (0-3) are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Prince Albert for a pair of contests. Next home action is Sunday, May 28 against the Swift Current Wolverines, with game time at 7 p.m.
