Tetachuk, Thomson earn rare dual shutouts as Warriors fall to Hurricanes

When Moose Jaw Warriors goaltender Carl Tetachuk and Lethbridge Hurricanes netminder Bryan Thomson faced off at Mosaic Place back on Feb. 9, they ended up putting on an impressive show before the Hurricanes went on to a 2-1 win.

On Tuesday night in Lethbridge, they were even better.

The two former teammates once again went head-to-head and put together the rarest of occasions as each picked up a shut-out, turning aside every shot they faced in regulation and overtime.

The Hurricanes would end up with the extra point, though, as Yegor Klavdiev scored the lone goal in the shootout to give Lethbridge the 1-0 win.

Tetachuk made 33 saves in picking up his first shutout of the season, while Thomson -- a Moose Jaw Minor Hockey product -- had 30 saves for his second career clean sheet.

The Warriors are now 27-17-3-2 on the season and sit two points back of Red Deer for third place in the Eastern Conference, four points up on Saskatoon. The Warriors also have points in 11 of their last 12 games, with 10 wins in that span.

There was little to decide between the two clubs in the first period, as neither team had more than a handful of chances.

Eric Alarie had one of those seven minutes into the game with a breakaway, but Thomson would be up to the task.

Tetachuk would make a big save at the other end of the ice seven minutes later, thwarting Hurricanes forward Corson Hopwo on a two-on-one shorthanded to keep the game scoreless heading into the second frame.

Tetachuk played three seasons in his hometown of Lethbridge before being traded to the Warriors and was honoured with a special highlight video during the first media timeout.

While the Warriors were able to outshoot the Hutricanes 14-4 in the second period, it was their overage netminder who continued to make the highlight-reel saves to keep things scoreless.

That included a two-on-one save on Riley Woods eight minutes into the period and a diving cross-crease stop on Ty Nash with four minutes left in the second.

The Warriors looked to get on the board with 5:11 to play in the period, but Cordel Larson had his power-play goal called back due to an offside review, after Moose Jaw had been in the Lethbridge zone for 14 seconds.

The third frame was largely carried by the Hurricanes but there would be no scoring, and that sent things into overtime

There, the Hurricanes’ Nash was sprung on a breakaway 20 seconds in, leading to Daemon Hunt drawing a hooking penalty to prevent the scoring attempt. The once-maligned Warriors penalty kill was up to the task, though -- including a block on a wide-open net by Lucas Breton as the penalty wound down -- and the game was off to the shootout.

There, both Ryder Korczak and Denton Mateychuk found iron on their attempts, and the Hurricanes would claim the win.

The Warriors are right back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Calgary to face the Hitmen. Game time is 8 p.m.

OVERTIME… Two Warriors received some very good news earlier in the day, as it was announced Mateychuk and Jagger Firkus had been selected to play in the CHL / NHL Top Prospects Game, the annual showcase of NHL Draft eligible talent… the duo are among 15 players from the WHL who will take part in the game, which takes place Mar. 23 in Kitchener.
