Strasbourg student wins pizza party for her class

The SSRWS was one of nine provincial watershed stewardship associations that were participating in this year’s contest.

The Wascana & Upper Qu’Appelle Watersheds Association Taking Responsibility (WUQWATR) and the Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds (SAW) just held their annual Wetlands & Wildlife Poster Contest.

A Strasbourg student, named Rylee Cherepuschak, from the William Derby School won first place for the grades 5/6 category for both the local contest and the provincial one. First-place prizes for Rylee included $500, a Mosaic-sponsored Citizen Science kit, and WUQWATR’s pizza party for her Strasbourg class. The pizza party sponsored by WUQWATR was a huge success, each kid got their own pizza and Rylee had a great time celebrating their win.

"Well, I did lots of research and when we would go out of town, there's wetlands and animals all around. So that gave me some ideas," said Rylee, the winner of the poster contest.

The South Saskatchewan River Watershed Stewards (SSRWS) was one of nine provincial watershed stewardship associations that were participating in this year’s contest.

“The theme of the 2022 poster contest was wetlands and wildlife,” explains David Sloan, chair of the WUQWATR board of directors. “Thank you to those students who submitted posters. It is exciting to see elementary school parents, teachers, and students engaged in preserving our watersheds.”

There were two categories to win. The categories were, grades 3/4, and grades 5/6, the winners of those categories then moved on to be judged at a provincial level against the top posters from the other eight watersheds stewardships.

WUQWATR is a non-profit grassroots organization that focuses on source water protection in the Wascana and Upper Qu’Appelle watersheds which extend from Regina to Humboldt and Central Butte to Tyvan. It is one of the largest watershed stewardship areas in Saskatchewan, covering more than 23,443 km2, including 109 communities.
